Utility

an 11' outboard utility boat

Build in PLYWOOD

Utility built by Wayne Brandes, Flagstaff, AZ

Characteristics
Length overall 11'-0"
Beam 5'-0"
Hull depth 26"
Average passengers 1-3
Hull weight (approx.): 140 lbs.
  • Hull type: Vee bottom hard chine hull developed for sheet plywood planking.
  • Power: Short shaft outboard motor to 10 hp. Long shaft motor can be used if transom modified.
  • Can the hull be extended or shortened? Yes. Up to 10% by re-spacing the frames from the aft end of the stem to the transom a proportional amount. We do not recommend increasing the beam.
  • Trailer: Designed for use with Glen-L Series 650 boat trailer plans.

The UTILITY is a practical boat ideal for fishing or water sport use. The lightweight hull is easily transported and can be car-topped. The generous beam provides plenty of room for gear or passengers. This feature also gives the boat exceptional stability. Combine this with a good "vee" and the flaring topsides, and you have the ideal modern utility boat.

The construction of the UTILITY is ideal for the amateur. It's easy and inexpensive to build. Three 4' x 8' sheets of 1/4" plywood will plank the entire boat. The forward part of the bottom is put on in a single sheet, slit up forward to form the vee portion. This method eliminates a joint along the keel giving a smooth, leakproof hull. When using Glen-L Plans & Patterns, all aspects of the construction are designed with the amateur in mind.
