Boatbuilding with Plywood |
 |
by Glen L. Witt (1918 - 2017)
Index, hundreds of photos, drawings, and illustrations, 312 pages, 8 1/2"x11", hardcover, 1989.
This is the "modified" third edition of the well-known text covering plywood and its use in boatbuilding, especially from the standpoint of the amateur builder. This "modified" version is the same as our third edition but a few photos have been replaced, some typos were corrected, and the cover was updated.
This book has become the recognized standard on a subject usually covered in otherbooks in a chapter at best.
Widely used as a reference text in college level boatbuilding classes, this practical book explains the simple ways to build your own boat, taking you step-by-step from lofting to finish. You can almost build a boat by "reading" the pictures and drawings. All aspects of plywood boat construction are covered including lofting, materials to use, tools required, framing methods, covering with fiberglass using either epoxy or polyester resin, cold-molded planking, cabin joinery work, Stitch-N-Glue construction, and much more.
This is a "must" book for both the beginner and accomplished boatbuilder who plans to build a boat using plywood. Numerous drawings and photos help put this building method in perspective and illustrate how almost anyone can build a plywood boat. The revised text also covers the use of epoxies for adhesives, encapsulation, and fiberglass over plywood use.
The author was a naval architect and boatbuilder who specialized in the field of amateur boatbuilding. He knows his subject because he built boats to develop new methods; not as a professional boatbuilder repeating the same building procedure.
"I've never built a boat (in progress), so the first book I bought was Glen-L Boatbuilding with Plywood, as well as a couple of other plywood boat books, and a book on designing boats. I promise I am not on the Glen-L payroll when I say that the Glen-L plywood book is the best of the books I bought, and worth the money. " Aaron B., Washington, DC
"Gayle, my brother gave me a used enlarged 3rd edition of the BOATBUILDING WITH PLYWOOD book for Christmas written by your father, Glen L. Witt, Naval Architect. I did not realize that your Dad was a Naval Architect. The book is in very good condition, very well written and is a joy to read. I have learned so much already. So many questions about fiberglassing, scarfing and even additional flotation answered. Despite being written many years ago, it is still a very relevant book. A definite must read and must have book." Sincerely, Luis V. Torres, Makati City, Philippines

The first and last book you will ever need |
I have had a copy of this book for about 15 years and wish I had found it earlier. Anyone who isnt sure about building a wooden boat should buy this first. The most comprehensive and simple explanations to all that magic lingo we hear mentioned. Clear and well illustrated images, cant think of any book I own that I rate so highly. |

Ive found the photographs of the various construction steps invaluable in explaining the different techniques. Im glad I purchased this book, the wealth of information contained within, more than offsets the price. |

Great book |
Im new to the entire process and this was a great starting point. I think the book is a bit dated in regards to epoxy and paint options/materials but the concepts outside of that element are unchanged. Very informative and worth every penny. |
