Francis Drake

Feast your eyes on our FRANCIS DRAKE! Here's a compact and economical package that offers world cruising capabilities with exceptional comfort and safety unique in this size. For the cruising couple or small family sailing on a limited budget, the FRANCIS DRAKE offers appealing features. Consider the fact that you can sleep 4 or 5 (including a handy double when desired), seat up to 6 for meals and conversation, and still have 2 good sea berths on either tack, plus a decent navigator's station complete with chart table, and an efficient L-shaped galley! As if this were not enough, there's a roomy toilet room-utility area forward with enclosed stall shower, head with space for a holding tank, a lavatory, a huge hanging locker, and plenty of room for sails, stores, and the anchor rode. And there's a separate oilskin locker next to the companionway, a vapor-tight locker at the transom for stove fuel, a 10 cubic foot ice box, and a centrally located engine for easy maintenance and good hull balance. Imagine all these features in a boat only 29' long!

But there's still more! On the FRANCIS DRAKE we've made the deck all one level with a compact watertight cockpit well and raised bulwark all around for safety. The outboard rudder and tiller are not only reliable but economical, and adapt to many self-steering systems with ease. The rig can be used as a cutter or sloop to suit a wide variety of sail combinations to match your sailing conditions exactly. The bowsprit not only adds character, but is functional as well, doing its part to make the handling of sails and ground tackle safe and easy. The hull features a long keel with cutaway forefoot for positive steering, windward ability, and quick tacking. Broad flaring topsides and trailboards forward sweeping aft to a graceful tumblehome transom will attract spectators in any port.

The FIBERGLASS version utilizes either PVC foam sandwich core or fiberglass planking (C-FLEX) with fiberglass laminates over a simple male mold. The PLYWOOD version uses strips of plywood or solid wood veneer, cold-molded, protected on the outside with fiberglass. Whichever method you select, there is nothing required in the construction beyond the abilities of the amateur who is reasonably handy. Our comprehensive Plans take you through the entire project so that you can achieve professional results you'll be proud of.
