Propeller Shafts
Two types of stainless steel propeller shafts are available in the standard lengths and diameters listed. Shafts are precision machined with a standard propeller shaft taper, milled for 1/4" key and threaded with 3/4" standard thread on 1" and 1-1/8" shafts. Standard sizes are listed, or as a special service, we will cut to your specified length. Please allow approximately one week for this service. Overall length can be determined by measuring from the coupling in the boat to the aft end of the strut, and adding 5" for 1" shaft.
Use our Type 304 shafts for low horsepower engines (200 hp max or lower). These are not suitable for 2-blade propeller applications.
Use our 17-4 shafts which are Ideal for higher horse power engines or if running a 2-blade propeller. The tensil strength is 130,000 to 135,000.
Note: 304 and 17-4 - shafts are available with a taper at both ends. There is an extra machining charge for the taper on the engine end. See 90-760 below. Before ordering a double tapered shaft, see this drawing and instructions.
For a guide to selecting shaft diameter based on propeller size, see our Hardware Description page.
K-500 Monel. The ultimate propeller shaft to use where highest tensile strength (up to 150,000 P.S.I.) and extra corrosion resistance are desired. Specially recommended for higher speeds or heavy-duty use with safety. Available in 1" diameter PER INCH of length.
NOTE: Maching is extra on these shafts. If you desire a standard taper at both ends, double the machining charge.
