After serving a boatbuilding apprenticeship, he spent ten years as design draftsman with Thornycrofts. He became Managing Director of Enfield Marine, building aluminum craft at Ryde, Isle of Wright and on the Greek Isle of Syros. On returning to the UK, he set up Sims Aluminum building aluminum boats. He is also a consultant for Swath Ocean International and Sims Leppard.
