Jean Pierre Dory

Jean Pierre was originally done as a custom design for a series of fishing craft to be used off the coast of Darwin, Australia. The plan set was later expanded to include both Sail and Power versions. Due to the wide hull and fixed ballast fin keel of NACA-foil section (either cast lead or iron can be used), the boat can carry generous sail with good windward ability. Easily built wood spars are detailed, but aluminum extruded types are optional.

There are several motor options on the Power version. The standard engine is a straight prop-and-shaft in-line unit passing through a long skeg that supports the rudder to protect the underwater gear. Another power option shows the once-traditional "haul-up" shaft and prop, but without the skeg which allows for easy beaching. There is also an option for a thru-hull "saildrive" type motor without skeg. Or for those who prefer outboards, you can use a well-mounted 20" to 25" long shaft motor.

On the sail version, the cabin door is offset to one side to clear the mast. Power can be a thru-hull "saildrive" type motor or straight shaft inboard with the shaft supported by a strut; a skeg is not used. In all cases, 10 to 20 horsepower is all you need regardless of motor type.

There is full-sitting headroom above the full-length v-berth with space for a head below. Construction is sheet plywood planking over straight-contoured frames of ordinary lumber, with little additional fairing required. Plans include instructions, material lists, and fastening schedules plus FULL SIZE PATTERNS so no lofting is required.
